As it turned out by the control mechanisms, a central role in the case seems to have been played by a pharmacist, in a village in eastern Thessaloniki, through which the prescriptions appeared to be executed.
A doctor is being taken to prison, after being sentenced by the five-member Criminal Court of Appeal of Thessaloniki to 7 years imprisonment for illegal prescriptions medicines to former IKA policyholders (now EOPYY), which was damaged by the amount of 480,000 eurosduring the period 2007-2009.
The Court, examining the case in the second instance, found him guilty -among other things- for false testimony and simple complicity in fraud. At first instance, he was sentenced to 9 years in prison, with the recognition of the mitigating factor of his subsequent good behavior, a sentence that had been suspended for its execution, on the condition of the payment of a financial guarantee.
According to the indictment, as a curator B ‘in a regional clinic of the National Health Service, in the area of Imathia, he issued hundreds of prescriptions for the administration of drugs to patients, whom he allegedly never examined for non-existent diseases. The referral panel included 1,500 prescriptions, which concerned medicines (some of which were expensive), the purchase of which was entirely covered by IKA.
As noted by the control mechanisms, a pharmacist seems to have played a central role in the case, in a village in eastern Thessaloniki, through which the recipes appeared to be executed. It is characteristic that the specific pharmacy was located at a distance of 83 kilometers from the regional doctor’s office of the accused doctor.
For this particular pharmacist, according to information, a separate case file was formed, which concerned the 6000 illegal prescriptions, while it also included other cases of doctors. She, according to the same information, was recently convicted in the second instance.
Apologizing, the doctor from Imathia – who was performing his duties at the regional clinic until recently – denied all the accusations, stressing that the prescriptions were for patients, who were actually examined for diagnosed diseases. According to his defenders, he examined at least 60 patients daily and during the disputed period he signed a total of 150,000 recipesemphasizing that their client was also a victim.
