A large-scale search and rescue operation for foreigners has been underway since yesterday evening in the sea area two nautical miles south of Delos under the coordination of the Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center of the Coast Guard – Greek Coast Guard.
Until now 108 foreigners have been rescued, while according to the statements of the rescued, four others are missing. Of the 108 rescued, 24 are women, 21 are children and 63 are men, while three of the above have already been transferred to the Mykonos Health Center.
Specifically last night, the EKSED / LS-EL.AKT. was informed about the existence of a sailing boat where a sufficient number of people were aboard and which was sailing unmanned 1.8 nautical miles southwest of Delos, while winds of 6-7 Beaufort were blowing in the area.
Immediately the EKSED / LS-EL.AKT. mobilized three patrol boats of LS-EL.AKT., adjacent ships, while at the same time a tugboat sailed from Mykonos.
Initially, the tug boat moored the sailboat, and then due to adverse weather conditions and the fact that the sailboat was flooded, it was decided to be taken to the islet of Agios Georgios, west of the port of Mykonos, to transport foreigners by passenger.
Finally, in the early morning hours, the 108 foreigners were transported safely to Mykonos, while the searches by boat and air, as well as by private boats to locate the other four missing persons, continue and are in full swing. Strong winds of 6-7 Beaufort prevail in the area.
It is noted that none of the survivors brought life jackets, while the sailing boat did not bring any rescue equipment.
From the first moment, the Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, Giannis Plakiotakis, was informed and instructed to immediately mobilize any appropriate means for the rescue of foreigners. In a statement, the minister congratulated the Coast Guard which “once again saved lives, which the ruthless circuits of traffickers put in mortal danger, without even basic protection measures and in particularly difficult conditions. “Greece is protecting its borders with determination, but its first priority is always the protection of human life.”
