The 3 + 1 road projects delivered in 2022 and 2023.
In road, flood and railway projects implemented in West Greece and cover the infrastructure deficit that existed in the area, he said Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, responsible for infrastructure, Mr. George Karagiannisspeaking at the conference entitled: “Projects and Infrastructure in Western Greece”.
As Mr. Karagiannis pointed out “through the great return of infrastructure in Greece, come the solutions that change the lives of citizens, because the way we move, speed and safety is an element of culture to improve everyday life.”
According to the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure in Greece, the large program of projects amounting to 13 billion euros is “running”, of which approximately 8 billion euros have been auctioned.
“The present has no tarpaulins, no announcements, has construction sites, has jobs, has projects that are nearing completion and others that are progressing at a very fast pace.”
In this context, the broad infrastructure plan in Western Greece is moving forward, with Mr. Karagiannis emphasizing that “we are implementing the commitment we undertook at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, but also as a government, to proceed with projects that deserve it and to cover the deficit in existing infrastructure. In Western Greece we plan and implement projects worth 2.5 billion that concern a wide range of infrastructure, such as railways, roads and flood defenses. It is clear that our interventions, smaller and larger, extend to every aspect of everyday life, to projects of local and supra-local interest “.
In addition, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure made special mention of the issue of road safety that is achieved in Western Greece with interventions amounting to 50 million euros. These are funds that are secured through the Road Safety Improvement Program (PEVOA).
Road projects that upgrade safety and make travel faster
The Undersecretary of Infrastructure then referred to the triptych that guarantees the implementation of the projects and which is the political will, the correct planning and the organized supervision. The most typical example is the “Patra-Pyrgos” highway, which is now under construction and today there are construction sites again. In 36 months the first 56km will be put into traffic. from Pyrgos and four months later the highway will be handed over in its entirety to the citizens.
“This is the reality and can not be disputed by anyone,” said Mr. Karagiannis, adding that at the same time, road safety projects worth 30 million euros are being carried out on the existing road.
At the same time, a series of road projects are already under construction in Western Greece that have been a long-standing request of local communities. These projects are:
- Aktio – Amvrakia and connection with Ionian Road: The project as a whole is expected to be completed and put into operation in 2023.
- Bypassing Amfilochia: In the summer, the citizens will have at their disposal this part of the project Aktio – Amvrakia, which will solve the traffic problem of the city.
- Connection of Lefkada with the road axis Aktio – West Axis: The road connection will be made through the section Aktio – Agios Nikolaos, 5 km long and Vonitsa – Lefkada, 16 km long. The project will be completed at the end of summer 2023.
At the same time, the new water supply pipeline of Lefkada will be constructed, approximately 8 km that passes parallel to the new road axis.
“In this project, with the multitude of problems, we come with a lot of work, to move it quickly, and in fact, we will give the first 5 kilometers earlier than planned,” said Mr. Karagiannis.
- Agrinio – Agios Vlasis: The project is completed at the end of 2022.
As the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure made known, “the studies for the connection of Agrinio with the Ionian Road have been assigned and are proceeding, a project that is a pre-election commitment of the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Costas Karamanlis”.
- Upgrade of the junction in Kompoti: All the necessary actions have been taken to start the works immediately in order to serve the traffic from Ioannina to Menidi.
As stated by the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, “the aim is to proceed with even more projects in Western Greece and in interventions that the residents have been asking for for years”.
Shielding the area with flood protection works
“Our plan specifically for Etoloakarnania exceeds 400 million euros and includes projects that change the daily lives of citizens, such as flood defenses” pointed out Mr. Karagiannis.
The construction of an irrigation and drainage network for the service of a rural area of a total area of 38,000 acres in Amvrakia, Amfilochia and Valto is proceeding immediately.
The project, with a budget of 64.5 million euros, will be funded by the Recovery Fund and the auction is expected by July, as the expropriation process is currently being completed.
In addition, about 80 million euros of flood protection works will be constructed around the Ionian Road, most of which are in the Prefecture of Etoloakarnania, while at the same time the studies for the construction of the new bridge of Evinos are in progress.
“We are proceeding with the flood protection of areas throughout the territory and their shielding against the intense phenomena brought about by climate change in order to ensure the safety of both the citizens and the infrastructure of the country,” underlined the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure.
“Works are our credentials, the continuation of our words”
At the same time, the plan of the railway projects in Western Greece is evolving at a very fast pace.
According to Mr. Karagiannis, “the works and competitions in the sections Kiato – Rododafni and Rododafni – Rio with a total budget of 565 million euros, are progressing. The project from Rio to the port of Patras, with undergrounding for the most part within the urban fabric, was auctioned. And of course, we bring the train to Pyrgos by upgrading the line from Kato Achagia “.
In closing, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure stated: “In every corner of Greece we are implementing large and smaller projects, ensuring that the recovery and development of the economy will be diffused and will concern all Greeks.”
