Afropunk Bahia Festival wins free screening in bars in São Paulo this Saturday

by

This Saturday, 27th, Salvador hosts the first Afropunk Bahia festival — but the good news is that the event can also be accompanied by anyone in São Paulo.

Created in New York in 2005, the festival has already circulated in cities such as Paris, London and Johannesburg and now arrives in Brazil in an edition with performances by artists such as Mano Brown, Margareth Menezes and Ludji Luna.

In São Paulo, three bars show the program live and free of charge, starting at 5:30 pm, for those who are there: Espaço Utomi, in Belenzinho, as well as Digaê and Rap Burger, both in the Baixo Augusta region.

In addition to establishments in São Paulo, houses in Rio de Janeiro and Salvador transmit Afropunk. The places were curated by Guia Negro, an Afro-themed reporting and tips website.

Directly referring to the name of the establishment, Rap Burger’s snacks have names that recall the style. Notorious BIG, a rapper who died in 1972, in the United States, gives his name to the sandwich made with hamburger buns, double beef blend, cheddar, fried eggs, fried bacon, potato chips, house ketchup, toasted brioche bread and house mayonnaise —great as the singer’s career was.

The snack bar is close to the Digaê Bar e Bahia, which offers typical Bahian food, such as acarajé, vatapá and caruru.

Finally, there is Espaço Utomi, located in the Belenzinho neighborhood, in the eastern region, which seeks to work highlighting the black origins in gastronomy. In addition to the dishes, which mix Brazilian and African cuisine, the drinks also follow this idea. The caipirinha, for example, is served with typical ingredients in Afro cuisine, collected in the establishment’s backyard.

The complete festival schedule can be seen on the festival’s website.
