Protest rally outside the Attica Zoological Park will take place this afternoon, Sunday 26 June, the Panhellenic Animal Welfare and Environmental Federation on the occasion of the killing of the chimpanzee.

He was the largest of the nine chimpanzees of the Attica Zoological Park, 27 years old and about 1.80 meters high. He managed to pass over the high power lines and the ditch with the water that exists around him and came out in the surrounding area of ​​the park. The park officials could not catch the animal and so it was decided to kill it.

As the Attica Zoological Park explained via Instagram, it all started in the morning at 09:40, when the officials realized the absence of the chimpanzee from his cell.

“This morning at 09:40 it was found by the Park staff after an incident between the chimpanzees, the escape from the area of ​​the alpha male chimpanzee.

The security protocol of the Park was immediately activated, the police were informed, the visitors were isolated and the chimpanzee, with the coordinated movements of the security staff in the presence of veterinarians, was taken to an isolated area in the security perimeter of the Park, where it was deemed necessary to neutralize 20 minutes later. . It is a tragic day for the Park, which led to the loss of the beloved to the whole family of the Park animal.

Anesthetics work on a calm animal in about 5-10 minutes. In an animal with elevated adrenaline it can reach up to 20 minutes. “Chimpanzees belong to the red and highest risk category, so according to the safety protocols and the risk assessment by the present and competent veterinarians, who observe the behavior of the animal, their neutralization is foreseen”.

However, the decision of the Attica Zoological Park provoked strong reactions on twitter, with many criticizing both the decision to kill him and the fact that the animal, instead of being free in nature, was in a cage.
