The renovation works at the University have started

by

The renovation works of Panepistimiou Street, in the section between Amerikis and Sina Streets, started at dawn.

The work will be carried out in the America – Homer subdivision and in the Homer – Sinai subdivision. Once the first section is completed, it will be delivered for use and the work will be moved to the next. According to the schedule for the first part of the project, it is expected that the work will be completed within 4 months.

Throughout the works, the technical crews of the Municipality of Athens and the Municipal Police will ensure the smooth and safe passage of people who move, work and do their shopping in the wider area.

It is noted that every time a part of the project is completed, the Municipality of Athens will provide detailed information on the new points of the works, as well as on the time of their start.

All four lanes of the vehicles will remain as they are.

At the same time, the passengers of the Public Transport will be served normally by the existing lines of buses and trolleys that run in the University, but also the stops, without any modification.

What the project provides

It is reminded that the project will connect Syntagma Square with Omonia through the central axis of the University. The renovation in the most central artery of the capital extends to 19,360 sq.m. public space with the aim of its aesthetic and environmental upgrade. Specifically, it is planned to widen the existing sidewalks, which will yield an additional 4,270 sq.m. to pedestrians.

The surface of the green spaces will be 2,260 sq.m. and will include large linear flower beds. In addition to the existing plane trees and acacias (a total of 167 trees), 83 plane trees will be planted along both sides of the road.

At the junctions of the University with the vertical streets, ramps with gentle slope will be created, in order to serve in their movement the disabled people, the elderly and the families with wheelchairs. A total of 16 friendly crossings will be created along the road for additional road safety.

The main elements of the regeneration plan include 59 outdoor living areas in the shade of trees, while 5 public fountains with drinking water will be created in order to limit the use of plastic bottles.

Finally, 112 modern lighting fixtures will be installed at the University, which have the advantage of minimal energy consumption.
