The “flying” Renault Air4 Concept, in collaboration with TheArsenale

by

To complete the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the Renault 4, the French carmaker has decided to work with TheArsenale to jointly create an original flying model that will move like a helicopter.

2021 marks the 60th anniversary of the Renault 4L, a car that has made record sales. It was announced that its sales volume exceeded 8 million units, it was sold in over 100 countries and was on the market for about 30 years. The original Renault 4 was a simple, efficient and versatile vehicle built from 1961 to 1992.

Renault partnered with TheArsenale and presented their study for the future flying car. AIR4 is another attempt by car manufacturers to create flying cars that can move on the road without traffic restrictions.

The vehicle is made entirely of carbon fiber, and retains the same lines and mass of the original 4L. Stiffness has been completely revised to meet new requirements such as pushing and lifting. It was announced that to achieve these goals, many hours of calculations and tests were required, with the most advanced electronic programs. Based on techniques that use artificial intelligence, TheArsenale engineers tested the construction capabilities to refine and refine the designers’ ideas before the first in-air tests began.

The AIR4 has no wheels. It has four propellers with two blades, one in each corner of the vehicle. The frame is in the middle of the swivel frame and the driver can access and sit in the cab of the vehicle by lifting the redesigned Renault 4 housing, which is hinged at the front.

From a technical point of view, the AIR4 is powered by 22,000 mAh lithium batteries that produce a total power of 90,000 mAh. The vehicle is rated at a horizontal top speed of 26 m / s, with an inclination of 45 ° during flights and up to a maximum inclination of 70 °. It can fly up to 700 meters with a take-off speed of 14 m / s, is held at 4 m / s for safety reasons and a landing speed of 3 m / s. The AIR4 is designed, built and assembled entirely in France, in the heart of Europe’s first technology park in Sophia Antipolis, on the Cote d’Azur.
