A 56-year-old woman, who was arrested in Evosmos, Thessaloniki, tried to sell an old religious icon via the Internet where she posted a related ad.

It was a portable Russian icon dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries and depicting Saint Panteleimon.

Police officers of the Department of Protection of Cultural Heritage and Antiquities of the Security of Thessaloniki found that he was asking a prospective buyer for the sum of 700 euros to sell it.

In addition to the above icon, a tripartite icon of the Virgin (Brefokratousa), also of Russian origin and of the same period, was also found in her possession.

The images were seized and shown to an archaeologist of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Thessaloniki, who ruled that they fall within the protective provisions of the law for the protection of antiquities and cultural heritage in general.

A case file was filed against her and she is being referred to the prosecutor of first instance in Thessaloniki.
