Its length ranges from 77-94 cm and with a wingspan that can reach 121-149 cm. A characteristic feature of the cormorant is its easily distinguishable yellow neck. Young individuals are generally lighter in color.
It usually lives near the sea, in lagoons, lakes and rivers. In winter it migrates to the South along the coasts.
In Greece we can meet him in the Winter as he comes from Northern and Eastern Europe to Greece, mainly in the Thermaic and Saronic gulfs but also in some lakes, such as Mikri Prespa, Kerkini and Orestiada. It is also found in the Delta of Axios. He is often seen sitting on posts and rocks near the sea or in lakes and rivers with his wings spread out to dry them. Excellent swimmer and good fisherman.
It nests in trees and rocks near wetlands, making its nest out of seaweed, but sometimes inland. It lays 3-4 eggs in the spring, which both parents spin for 28-31 days. In some countries cormorants are used by fishermen as fishing aids.
