Fire in Dadia: “Trees burned, but the forest did not burn”

The large fire that broke out on July 21 has been brought under control – Firefighters remain and operate in the area

Expressing the belief that “Her forest Nannywas, is and will remain the heart and lungs of the Municipality of Soufli…”, the mayor Panagiotis Kalakikos thanks everyone who contributed “to the titanic effort to manage this emergency situation”.

With field data advocating for fire control, Mr. Kalakikos he specifically mentions in the thank you announcement he issued:

“In the last week, perhaps some of the blackest pages in the book of its modern history were written about the forest of Dadia. The fire that broke out on Thursday, July 21, 2022 for an as yet unknown cause, it is currently possible to say that it is under the control of the fire brigade, which of course are still working on the active foci.

It is noted that at the time of today’s report, the fact that human lives and domestic lands are not mourned is considered important…”.

Mr. Kalakikos thanks it Fire brigade for the immediate mobilization underlining the peculiar conditions under which he attempted and which made his work very difficult. The officers of the Army and the Hellenic Army, the G.G. of Civil Protection and the departments of P.P. of the Region of Evros Prefecture, PAMTH among others for the provision of the necessary machinery and the contribution to fire response planning, the Directorate of Forestry and the Forestry Department of Soufli, the Forestry Cooperatives, the voluntary groups-associations and individual volunteers, the private professionals of of the Municipality of Soufli and the wider region as well as the citizens, the staff of the Dadia National Park Management Unit, the animal welfare organizations for the care of wild animals, the Deputy Regional Governor for Agricultural Economy Vassilis Delistamati and the Deputy Mayor of Technical Services of the Municipality of Soufli Nikos Gaidatzis for their contribution “in the process of critical decisions”.

Finally, Mr. Kalakikos notes that “Many trees may have burned, but the forest was not lost!” emphasizing the need for cooperation between agencies in decision-making for forest restoration and upgrading.
