Investigations by Chilean authorities into the mysterious large hole that appeared on the surface of a site near a Copper mine.
Chilean authorities have launched an investigation today into a mysterious hole about 25 meters in diameter that appeared over the weekend in a mining area in the north of the country.
Chilean media showed aerial images of the hole at a site where Canada’s Lundin Mining ( LUN.TO ) has a copper mine, about 665 kilometers (413 miles) north of the capital Santiago.
The National Geological and Mines Survey was notified of the hole on Saturday and sent specialized personnel to the area, the agency’s director David Montenegro said in a statement.
“There is a considerable distance, about 200 meters, to the bottom,” Montenego said.
“We haven’t detected any material down there, but we’ve detected a large amount of water.”
The National Geology and Mines Service said areas of the entrance to the Alcaparrosa mine site, located near the hole, were sealed off.
In a statement released on Monday afternoon, Lundin Mining said the hole had not caused any problems or injured any workers or members of the community.
“The nearest house is more than 600 meters away while any residential area or public service is almost a kilometer away from the affected zone,” the statement said.
Lundin Mining owns 80% of the property and the rest is owned by Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation.
