How they crossed illegally into Greek territory – 5 members of the migrant smuggling ring were arrested

A criminal group that facilitated the illegal entry of immigrants into the country has announced that it has been dismantled, arresting five of its members, including three Indians and two Greeks.

This particular group appears to have illegally trafficked foreigners, of Indian origin, whose members were picked up from areas of Kilkis, transporting them in vehicles initially to makeshift accommodation in Imathia and then boarding them on buses or trains bound for Attica.

The smugglers traveled by air to Serbia and then arrived, probably by road, in North Macedonia, from where they crossed illegally into Greek territory. According to police sources, each trafficker paid the ring between 6 and 8 thousand euros for the journey from their home country to their final destination. For their transport to Greek territory, the members of the group took protective measures in order not to be noticed by the authorities (using escort cars).

Police officers of the Immigration Management Department of Imathia, arrested last Sunday afternoon initially three members of the ring, as they were transporting four foreigners who lacked travel documents. The other two members were then arrested and it was found that one of them (a citizen) was illegally employing foreigners whom he was temporarily hosting in a hut he owned.

In the investigations that followed in two accommodations and in the above hut (in Imathia), seven traffickers were identified who were awaiting their further promotion.

They were also found in possession of the above houses and confiscated:

  • 6 passports of foreigners,
  • 11 mobile phone (sim) cards,
  • 6 cell phones and
  • a sum of 570 Euros.

In addition, the above two vehicles were confiscated, as means of transportation of the foreigners.

The arrested were taken to the public prosecutor of Veria and referred to apologize to the competent investigator, while the case file includes one more of their accomplices (local).
