Compulsory vaccination for those over 60: The fine of 100 euros, the exceptions

by

Vaccination against the coronavirus becomes mandatory for citizens over 60 years of age, after the approval of the relevant amendment by the Parliament. Otherwise, an administrative fine of 100 euros per month will be imposed.

The full framework for the mandatory vaccinations will be presented by the Minister of Health, Thanos Plevris at 10.30 in the morning. The President of EODY Theoklis Zaoutis will also participate in the briefing.

Over 24,000 new appointments in 48 hours

In the past two days, about 24,000 new vaccination appointments were made in the age group over 60.
Based on EODY estimates, one in two of the 520,000 citizens over 60 will choose to be vaccinated. * This will leave less than 250,000 unvaccinated, the “hard core” that insists on not getting the vaccine.

Mitsotakis: I prefer to be temporarily strict

Speaking in Parliament, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed that this is an option “timely and targeted, which is permeated by justice and proportionality and determination.”

“From the first moment I did not hide that this decision tormented me. I am a deeply liberal politician and any notion of my obligation is quite difficult to digest. I feel a heavier responsibility for the common good. “Unlike others who took the risk of splitting the health front, I prefer to prove myself temporarily strict and prove to be health right,” added Mr. Mitsotakis.

What the provision provides

The amendment stipulates that for overriding reasons of public health protection, all natural persons who have their residence or habitual residence within the Greek territory and who were born up to 31 December 1961 will be vaccinated against coronavirus.

The obligors must have received the first or the only installment by the 16th of January 2022, and the completion of the vaccination cycle must be done according to the foreseen procedures and in the foreseen time.

Who are excluded

Those who:

  • have been ill for a period of 180 days from the illness and
  • have proven health reasons that prevent the vaccine from being given.
  • In particular, people with disabilities who are unable to undergo the vaccination procedure for objective reasons related to their actual condition, as a consequence of their illnesses, such as severe cases of autism and epilepsy, may be exempted from the vaccination obligation due to a justified reason. on the recommendation of their treating physician and after approval by the committees by health district.
  • Also, the application of this regulation does not include the categories of workers who are obliged to be vaccinated, ie the health workers of all health structures, the workers in nursing homes and the workers in structures for the disabled.

The administrative fine – When the sanctions are lifted

In case of non-compliance with the obligation, an administrative fine of 100 euros per month is imposed. In case of the first installment up to the 15th day of the month and the completion of the vaccination cycle as provided, especially for the specific month, an administrative fine of 50 euros will be imposed.

If the first installment is made from the 16th day of the month onwards, a total penalty of 100 euros is imposed. For the month of January 2022, for violation of the obligation, an administrative fine of 50 euros is imposed.

Penalties are lifted from the first day of the month following the first installment. In case of completion of the vaccination cycle, according to the foreseen procedures and in the foreseen time, the penalties are imposed from the time of establishment of the relevant obligation.

The relevant fine is certified and collected without delay by the Independent Public Revenue Authority in accordance with the Public Revenue Collection Code.

The resources raised from the imposition of sanctions are used exclusively to strengthen the National Health System, in the context of dealing with the pandemic.
