A disoriented brown bear, believed to be intoxicated after consuming a large amount of hallucinogenic honey (“mad honey”), was rescued today in the Duzce province of northwestern Turkey.

Images have emerged showing the bear stumbling, making unusual noises and lying on its belly in the back of a truck after people rescued the visibly weakened animal from the forest.

Mad honey, or “deli bal” in Turkish, is a type of rhododendron honey that can have hallucinogenic effects.

The bear was taken to a veterinarian, where it received treatment and will likely be released back into the wild in the coming days, local authorities said, adding that the animal is in good condition.

The Ministry of Agriculture invited Turks on Twitter to suggest a name for the bear.
