A 24-year-old woman in Crete escaped from her violent husband thanks to her neighbor who, realizing what was happening, immediately intervened by rushing home and then informing the authorities, choosing to act and not “turn her back”.

The new family case registered in Crete, on Selinou Street, in Chania, in the early hours of Thursday, is shocking.

A Chaniotissa woman who noticed the incident described the events to zarpanews.gr, recounting how the sounds of blows and cries were so loud that she wondered what was happening. And when he went to see, he realized that in the next house a young man was beating his, also young, wife.

“I heard cries in the night and they got louder. Bangs began to sound, like cuffs, and then something like a snare. I ran to see, it was right next door and I started knocking on the door.”

When they opened it, she saw the 27-year-old foreigner caressing his 24-year-old wife. But she was clearly overwhelmed and scared.

“He told me that nothing happened, but I didn’t believe him and asked him to talk to her alone. Then he started screaming that she’s his, that he can do whatever he wants to her, that if he wants to he can cuff her as much as he wants, that it’s no one’s business to be fucked and stuff like that. He moved threateningly towards me at the end and then I left the house.

But while I was outside, the girl came out, she told me that he tried to choke her, and then I called the police.”

When the police arrived and knocked on the door, Haniotissa was with them. The foreigner, despite the presence of the police, threw himself out of the apartment, threatening her and essentially repeating what he had said before, as a result of which he was immediately arrested, while Haniotissa also filed a lawsuit for the threats.

The automatic procedure was initiated, he was charged with causing bodily harm, domestic violence and threatening, and in the trial that took place immediately, he was sentenced to a total of 25 months in prison, of which he will however serve 2, as the rest was suspended.

In the meantime, the young woman is being hosted by a friend of hers, while the police investigation made it clear that both spouses were not in the country legally.

“What is the importance of origin, when such incidents occur”, asked Haniotissa, who was exposed to the case solely thanks to her human interest. “Meanwhile, I’m afraid that if he approaches the girl again sometime in the future, worse could happen. She married him at 16 and didn’t know how to handle the situation at all”, he added.

It is noted that according to zarpanews.gr, the woman, thanks to whom the 24-year-old’s torture ended, has in fact taken the initiative to create a detailed guide in various languages that can be shared with women from various countries who live or come in Greece and will mention their rights and what they should do if they suffer domestic violence.
