The elderly woman from Lagadas spoke about the incident with the dog, at which she threw the cane, after the uproar caused by the video that was made public.
In the video, the woman can be seen throwing her walking stick for no reason at a dog that had found shade and was sleeping on the sidewalk.
The 75-year-old woman, against whom a case file was filed, spoke to Alpha and appeared remorseful for her action, stressing that she had no intention of harming the animal. “I saw him lying down, I thought he was awake and wouldn’t leave. I didn’t want to hit it, what did the animal do to me to hit it? I just wanted to scare it away so I could walk.”
As she said, she has been the victim of a dog attack in the past and this has made her wary of strays. “Fear made me throw the stick at the dog, so that I could walk without being bitten.”
That day, as she claims, despite her mobility problems, she went for a walk to the main road, in the village of Chrysavgi in Lagada. “I didn’t understand how he was sleeping, I can’t see well and I can’t hear. I have health problems, I’m unsteady, I can’t walk well. I turn my head, lose my pace and fall. I only have the sidewalk to help me.”
The incident happened in front of the yard of the woman’s house. He couldn’t make out who the dog was, so he knew what his reaction would be if he approached it. “I got scared, the dog was big and I threw my walking stick.”
A case file is filed against her for violation of the law on the welfare of companion animals, while she claims that the specific incident was a mistake. “I used to have animals, now I can’t take care of them. Here I can’t put water for me, how can I do it for an animal. I’ve never thrown a stick at a dog before. Here the place was filled with dogs for 9 months and I never minded them.”
