The presence of a “cold lake” in the upper atmosphere, which has been moving in recent days in the Balkan region at a height of about 5,500 meters above sea level, is responsible for the weather instability in our country, causing locally intense storms and hailstorms, mainly in the continental parts.
According to the latest prognostic data of the National Observatory of Athens / Meteo.gr, the cold lake will move south and on Sunday will be in the upper atmosphere of our country, thus continuing the weather instability for the fourth consecutive day. Due to the location of the cold lake, in addition to the mainland areas, it is expected to cause phenomena in the island areas, where due to the summer vacation period, special attention should be paid to marine activities, since the rains and local storms will be temporarily accompanied from strong winds (burinia) mainly in the Central Ionian, the Sporades and the islands of the Northern Aegean.
In more detail, today local rains or storms are initially expected in Ionia, Epirus, Macedonia and Thessaly, which will gradually extend to the rest of the mainland, as well as to Evia and the islands of the Northern Aegean. The phenomena may be strong in places and accompanied by hailstorms in the midday and afternoon hours in the continental areas, until midday in the Central Ionian and mainly in the evening hours in the Northeastern Aegean.
After the afternoon the phenomena will gradually and from the west stop in the greater part of the mainland, however they will continue locally in areas of Eastern Thessaly, Evia, Sporades, North-East Aegean and Thrace.
Finally, according to meteo, despite the improvement that the fire-meteorological indicators will present, special attention should be paid to the continental areas where the phenomena will manifest, since there will be intense electrical activity, resulting in the risk of forest fires from lightning strikes.
