Authorities had warned citizens not to approach the mammal.

She was killed FreyaThe walrus who had become the mascot in his fjord Osloamid fears for the safety of citizens, as Norwegian officials announced.

The 600-kilogram marine mammal, which climbed onto boats, had won the hearts of locals who, against repeated advice from the authorities, not to approach the animal. In one instance, authorities were reportedly forced to cordon off a swimming area as Freya chased a woman into the water.

Last week, Norway’s fisheries ministry released images of a crowd – including children – standing within half a meter of the marine mammal.

As reported by Guardiantoday, the responsible minister, Frank Bakke-Jensen announced that the decision to euthanize the animal was made “based on an overall assessment of the continuing threat it posed to human safety”.

“From last week’s field observations, it became clear that the public ignored the advice to keep their distance from the walrus. Therefore, the ministry’s management concluded that the possibility of possible harm to humans was high and that the safety of the animal could not be maintained.”

Due to the behavior of the citizens, the competent authorities had not ruled out the possibility of transporting Freya from the fjord or, in the worst case, killing her, a scenario that was finally advanced.
