In 673 urban fires, 516 relief services and 284 forest fires, of which 35 occurred in the last 24 hours, the Fire Department was called to intervene according to what the press representative of the PS, fire chief, Yannis Artopairos, reported today in the regular weekly briefing.

Regarding the fire that broke out this morning in the Laya area of ​​Eastern Mani, Mr. Artopioos emphasized that 42 firefighters with three groups of infantry departments, eight vehicles, eight aircraft and two helicopters are working, while assistance is provided by water tankers of the local government.

According to the press representative of the PS, the most serious fire of this week occurred during the evening hours on August 10 in an inaccessible area near the settlement of Lefki, in Thassos.

Strong ground and air forces from several Regions of Greece attempted to extinguish it. Assistance in the extinguishing work was provided by forces made available by the GRETHA, volunteer firefighters and volunteer Civil Protection groups, as well as water carriers and project machinery from the Region of Eastern Macedonia & Thrace.

Additionally, he emphasized that in relation to the fire in Thassos, a 65-year-old local man was arrested for arson with intent for the fires that occurred on August 2, 2022 in the “Kourvakia” location and on August 10, 2022 in the “Makry Rahoni Achladas” location. Inflammable materials and objects were found in the possession of the arrested person. The arrested person has been referred to the judicial authorities for further action.

According to the data of the Fire Department, from the beginning of the fire season until today, 137 arrests have been made, of which 65 cases concern arrests for the offense of arson.

However, in parallel with dealing with the forest fires, on the afternoon of August 14, the operations center of the P.S. received 79 calls for water pumping and tree cutting due to the heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds, which occurred in the wider area of ​​Volos.

For tomorrow, Thursday, as the PS spokesperson pointed out, a high risk of fire is expected in Attica, Boeotia, Evia, Peloponnese, Western Greece, Heraklion, Lasithi, Dodecanese, Cyclades, islands of the Eastern Aegean, Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Ithaca.

Finally, according to the Emergency Weather Deterioration Bulletin issued today by the National Meteorological Service, high temperatures are expected to prevail in the country for the next three days. It is pointed out, however, that on Saturday a change in the weather is expected from the northwest with storms and strong winds.
