Smiles of peace from the children of war: The largest hospitality program in Europe is completed

With the reception this week of the last two shipments from Bucha and Poltava, Ukraine, Europe’s largest program to host children from the war-torn country comes to an end.

Staying for a few days away from the sirens and ravages of war brought smiles back to the eyes of Ukrainian children who have faced the harshest images, as the vast majority of them come from the deeply wounded region of Bucha. This is assured both by the Bucha Authorities who are in contact with the children’s chaperones and parents, as well as by the children’s camp operators who captured some of the most beautiful moments of the children’s hospitality. And there is no doubt that the children from Greece and Ukraine laid the foundations of a friendship with a future.

A total of 525 boys and girls aged 6-15 years and 92 accompanying adults traveled from Ukraine (37 children were already staying in refugee shelters and residences in Greece) and were accommodated in a total of 21 Children’s Camps – members of PELK, in Halkidiki, Thessaloniki, Kavala, Magnesia, Attica, Corinthia, Ilia and Messinia.

The project was coordinated by the Deputy Minister of Migration and Asylum, Ms. Sofia Vultepsi, in collaboration with the Ukrainian Ambassador to Greece, Mr. Sergii Shutenko and the Consul of Ukraine in Athens, Ms. Anna Tischenko, with the assistance of the NGO “FYLAKTO”, the head of the Mission of the International Organization for Migration in Greece, Mr. Gianluca Rocco, the General Secretary for Reception of Asylum Seekers, Mr. Manos Logothetis, the EUAA (European Asylum Service) and the Panhellenic Union of Private Camp Operators (PELK).

The penultimate mission with 210 children and 37 companions crossed the border of Promachona late last night, where they were welcomed by the commander Mr. Vassilis Nikiforou and the staff of the YMA’s Sintiki Structure to distribute bedding provided by the IOM for their accommodation needs. The IOM then picked up the 210 children and transported them to a total of seven destinations in Halkidiki, Attica, Corinthia and Ilia.

The last shipment of 21 children and three chaperones from Poltava, Ukraine is expected in Promahonas on Saturday, August 20.

Before taking the road back to Ukraine, all the missions stay overnight at the Serres Building of the YMA, where the administrator Mrs. Dimitra Panagiotaki takes care of their hospitality.
