Mylopotamos: Racist motivations in the attack on German tourists according to the case file

by

The authorities believe that the two defendants “pulled it off” because they were dealing with foreign tourists and they estimate that if some Greeks had been in their place, the episode would not have escalated and would have ended in its first phase, i.e. before the pursuit.

The case file filed against the two defendants for attacking German tourists in Mylopotamos, Crete, concerns crimes committed with racist characteristics and this weighs even more heavily on the case.

Specifically, according to Cretalive, in the context of the attack with racist characteristics, the order of the Prosecutor of the Supreme Court was initiated, in this spirit the file of the Rethymno Security was also initiated, in this context the criminal prosecutions brought against weight of the two Cretans. In other words, they claim, based on the indictment, that they were attacked for racist reasons, due to their ethnic origin.

The authorities believe that the two defendants “pulled it off” because they were dealing with foreign tourists and they estimate that if some Greeks had been in their place, the episode would not have escalated and would have ended in its first phase, i.e. before the pursuit.

However, not everyone seems to embrace this position. There are not a few who believe that the defendants could show similar violent behavior even to Cretans. The difference lies more in the fact that the Cretans know and would give way to anger out of fear, but the tourists don’t and so they did the obvious thing in order to record the details of the driver of the crash in the rental car that the family from Germany was in . It is about a 46-year-old stepfather and three brothers, aged 25, 27 and 23, who were staying in a hotel in the Skaleta area of Rethymno.

Punches were thrown from both sides

What is certain is that in the first phase of the episode there was a fight and a fight took place. The start was made by the 38-year-old Mylopotamites, the driver of the 4×4, who, when the Germans asked for his information about the damage, got out of the car and punched his 25-year-old brother in the face, who was sitting in the passenger seat with the window open .

The punch did not go unanswered. As soon as he saw his brother being beaten, the 27-year-old German got out of the rental vehicle and in turn punched the 38-year-old Cretan.

Based on what is described, the 36-year-old Cretan passenger also took an active part in the episode, who was also caught holding hands with the 25-year-old German. And while the fight was in progress, the 38-year-old allegedly went to the 4×4, took a knife and moved threateningly towards the Germans, who, seeing the danger coming, entered the rental and started to leave.

The sequel was even more dangerous since the two Cretans allegedly chased the Germans’ vehicle with a 4×4, falling over it several times. When they managed to overtake them, they hit them in reverse and put the rear wheels on the hood of the rental vehicle. Unthinkable scenes in the “heart” of Perama, which have even been recorded by a security camera.

German’s family believes the attack is racially motivated. They claim that if they were not killed during the wild chase, it is purely due to the experienced driving behavior of the 46-year-old driver, while they acknowledge that the help of locals in Perama who actually stepped in the middle to flee them, was a catalyst.

However, the defense attorneys categorically deny any connection of the episode with racist characteristics, as attributed to the two Cretans.
