Pretending to be electricity, gas or elevator company technicians, they would enter homes for the elderly and use the employment method to remove sums of money and jewelry

The multi-month, methodical and thorough investigation by police officers of the Harilaou – Analipsio Security Department led to the dismantling of a multi-member criminal group whose members are involved in cases of theft by employment method.

As part of the investigation of the case, the details of twenty-seven (27) members of the ring were identified, eight (8) of which have already been arrested pursuant to relevant warrants.

These are citizens aged 21 to 59, with the majority of them connected by family ties, against whom a relevant case file was filed.

As emerged from the police investigation, the above-mentioned persons had formed a criminal group with the aim of committing criminal acts, specifically theft by employment method, in order to obtain an illegal financial benefit.

In more detail, the members of the circuit, acting together, with a different composition each time and having distinct roles on a case-by-case basis, pretended to be electricity, natural gas, elevator technicians, etc. and under the pretext of damage inside the home of their prospective victims, they entered the interior from where they removed sums of money and jewelry – valuables.

Characteristics of their mode of action were:

  • the selection of a specific age group as potential victims (the elderly)
  • locating them mainly in areas where public markets took place
  • their employment upon entering their home
  • “caging” them in a specific room so that they do not have an image of the movement of the perpetrators in the rest of the house, which they achieved by moving electrical appliances in order to locate alleged damage (e.g. moving a refrigerator, kitchen, etc.) and
  • the movement of the perpetrators from their areas of residence (Prefecture of Attica, Prefecture of Magnisia and Diavata of Thessaloniki) to their targets located in the urban complex of Thessaloniki, even with vehicles rented from companies in order to avoid their possible connection with criminal acts.
  • With this methodology, during the period from the end of May 2021 to the end of February 2022, they committed at least (27) thefts, while the value of the loot they obtained (money and jewelry – valuables) is estimated to exceed in total ( 840,000) euros.

A total of five (5) vehicles were confiscated that were used by the members of the group to go to the places where the illegal acts were committed, to escape from them and to transport the stolen goods.

It is noted that the majority of the perpetrators have in the past concerned the authorities for related crimes.

The arrested persons were taken to the competent judicial authorities, while investigations continue by police officers of the Security Department of Harilaou – Assumption in cooperation with personnel of the Department of Crimes against Property, but also of other Security Services throughout the territory, to identify and arrest members of the ring, in against which warrants were issued after the filing of the case file.

The investigation is also continuing to identify any other victims.
