On the Greek airwaves, Greek F-16s with American B-52s and Italian Eurofighter Typhoons

This allied activity, which was jointly planned by GEETHA, NATO AIRCOM and the Italian Armed Forces, is taking place for the third time in a short period of time

Allied joint training with the participation of an American strategic bomber B-52, Greek F-16 fighters and Italian Eurofighter Typhoons took place yesterday west of the Peloponnese.

Specifically, at the request of NATO’s Air Command (AIRCOM), a B-52 strategic bomber of the US Bomber Task Force – during its flight as part of the Inter-Allied Operation “ONYX SWING” – carried out joint interception training with the Greek Armed Forces, near air support and escort to the Athens FIR which involved a pair of Italian Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft as well.

As announced by GEETHA, after its entry from the Skopje FIR, the B-52 was received by a pair of Greek Air Force F-16 fighter jets, which undertook an escort mission within the Athens FIR, carrying out during the flight an operational training in High Value Unit protection items [High Value Asset (HVA)]with the simultaneous participation of a pair of Italian Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft in the area west of the Peloponnese.

After the end of the said operational training and accompanied by another pair of Greek F-16s, a close air support exercise was carried out [Close Air Support (CAS)] with the Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC), with the participation of personnel and means of the Special Warfare Command (DEP) of the GEETHA. Subsequently, the pair of Greek F-16s escorted the American B-52 aircraft west, until it exited the Athens FIR.

This allied activity, which was jointly planned by GEETHA, NATO AIRCOM and the Italian Armed Forces, takes place for the third time in a short period of time, was executed once again with excellent results, demonstrates inter-allied cohesion and solidarity and contributes in the upgrading of the multi-level military synergy of the Armed Forces of the NATO member states, promoting the level of operational readiness, combat capability, as well as the interoperability and cooperation of the participants in an allied context, concludes the GEETHA announcement.
