On the 1st of September, the Feast of the Indictus, i.e. the beginning of the new ecclesiastical year, is celebrated in the Pansept Patriarchal Church of Agios Georgios in Fanari
The Ecumenical Throne proceeded with the signing of the Synodal Act of Canonization of Saint Bessarion of Agathonitos. Finance Minister Christos Staikouras was received by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Fanari and attended the signing ceremony of his canonization.
The Metropolitans of Messinia Chrysostomos and Fthiotidos Simeon were present. The Governmental Representative, Yannis Oikonomou, also had a meeting with the Ecumenical Patriarch.
The Fanari had proceeded with the canonization of Saint Bessarion of Agathonitos on June 14, as it had canonized the blessed Hieromonk Bessarion (Korkoliakon) in the canon of the Orthodox Church, from the I. Agathon Monastery of the Diocese of Fthiotido, after a meeting of the Holy and Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The ranking of the Saint was based on a relevant report of the Canonical Committee.
The new Saint of the Church, Vissarion (Korkoliakos) the Agathonite, was born in Petalidi, Messinia in the year 1908, where he learned his first letters. His secular name was Andreas. At the age of 18 he went to Kalamata, where he connected with spiritual people and decided to enter the holy clergy. He became a monk and took the name Bessarion. Then he was ordained a Deacon, Priest and received the office of Archimandrite. In the year 1935, following the invitation of the Metropolitan of Karditsa, Ezekiel, Fr. Vissarion went to Karditsa, to devote himself to the work of the ministry.
Throughout his life his guide was charity. Even shortly before he departed to the Lord, Saint Vissarion asked from his bed of pain in the Sotiria hospital about the children, the poor, the Church and the problems of society. After the Liberation and the Civil War, Father Vissarion left Karditsa . Already an Archimandrite with a long ascetic life and rich spiritual and social work, he went to the Agathonos Monastery after 1955.
Every Monday and Tuesday he went to the Hospitals of Lamia, saw the patients, comforted them and confessed to them. Father Bissarion also confessed the children at the Ecclesiastical Lyceum of Lamia and was their spiritual teacher. He would confess the children and at the end he would always put “something” in their hand, to strengthen them.
Father Vissarion divided what he collected into two “sacks”. He brought one sack to the Monastery for his needs, as at that time the Agricultural Technical School was operating here and the Holy Monastery housed 82 needy children. He distributed the contents of the other “sack” directly Saint Vissarion fell asleep on January 22nd at the Sotiria hospital from pulmonary edema.
His body was transferred to Agathonos Monastery, but due to the severe bad weather prevailing at that time, he could not be buried in the cemetery and was finally buried in the Baptistery. When, years later, he was exhumed due to subsidence on the eastern side of the Monastery, his coffin was found in excellent condition. The monks took it to the cemetery to remove the old man’s bones, but when they opened the lid they were surprised to see that his body was incorruptible. thousands of believers.
