With the participation of a large number of people, the 13th Potato Festival of Naxos was held after two years of absence due to the coronavirus pandemic, in the area of ​​Agia Anna by the Union of Agricultural Cooperatives of Naxos.

“We have returned to our normal rhythms after two years of inactivity and so this year we are organizing the 13th Potato Festival, in which the people, locals and visitors to the island, will have fun and taste the potato of Naxos”, said the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency vice-president of the Agricultural Cooperative of Naxos, Iakovos Valeris and added: “The potato of Naxos is a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) product which is made in Naxos, packed in Naxos and distributed to businesses throughout the country.”

Residents and visitors, listening to traditional island songs from the voice of Stellina Konitopoulos and the “teacher” of island music, Manolis Barberakis, had the opportunity to taste the freshly fried potatoes which were cooked in traditional huge cauldrons of the Union as well as potatoes… spit, in collaboration with 300 chefs who are active in catering businesses on the island.

The top culinary event, having the character of a traditional Greek festival, combined the island festival with potato treats created by renowned chefs. The event was attended by well-known athletes, gymnasts and journalists, among others, who analyzed the beneficial role that local products have in maintaining good physical condition and well-being, as the theme of the celebration was: “Fitness and nutrition”.

The Board of Directors of the Cooperative led by the president, Dimitris Kapounis, welcomed the visitors of the festival, thanked them for their presence there, and underlined that “EAS Naxos will always be by their side”.

During the event, the Naxian Excellence Awards by EAS Naxos were awarded and voted for by the newly formed committee of people of letters and arts led by the professor of the Agricultural University, Giannis Politis.

Potatoes

Among others, Katerina Vavoula, the first Naxi student who entered the Athens Medical School this year as the first of the first, was awarded.

The well-known actress Katerina Didaskalou also received an award for her contribution to art and culture. She thanked the residents of the Cycladic island for their hospitality, but also for their ecological awareness as, as she said, they take care to keep the beaches and seas clean.

Finally, the Holy Metropolis of Paronaxia also received an award for its charitable work.
