In March 2022, the implementation of the homeless census is planned, according to the Deputy Minister of Labor & Social Affairs Domna Michailidou. Answering a topical question of the Larissa MP of SYRIZA-PS Vassilios Kokkalis, on “Securing a Home for All – Constitutional Obligation of the State”, Ms. Michailidou referred to the measures taken by the government to address homelessness, including of the homeless with additional services and at the same time the increase of welfare benefits to the vulnerable groups of the population.
As Ms. Michailidou said, in the framework of the program “Creation of Tools and Definition of Procedures for the Registration of the Homeless”, the inventory of the homeless is carried out, which will be implemented universally, no later than March 2022, and the establishment of a fixed communication mechanism. cooperation between local authorities and central government in order to simplify service delivery procedures.
Referring to the support of our vulnerable fellow citizens, Domna Michailidou said that:
-We increased by 15% the Minimum Guaranteed Income for all beneficiaries.
-We expanded the beneficiaries of the EU with the inclusion of homeless and abused women living in hosting institutions.
-We increased the Housing Allowance by 34%.
The Undersecretary made extensive reference to the “Housing and Work” program, which she established as a permanent state benefit, but also to the “Creating a socially and economically affordable housing network” program. The aim of the program, which will be financed with 1,570,000 euros from the Recovery Fund, is the utilization of houses of the center which are not inhabited for a long time. The main beneficiaries will be individuals and families who are at risk or experiencing homelessness.
Closing her speech, Domna Michailidou stated that: “No one on the sidelines, no one behind. The homeless, like any other vulnerable fellow citizen, are not left to their own devices. The State takes care of meeting their immediate needs and their dignified living. At the same time, with a vision and a plan, we are proceeding with the implementation of policies for their return to the active social and economic life of their city “.
For his part, Mr. Kokkalis predicted that with the new bankruptcy law passed by the government, “there will be people who will lose their homes.” He even asked the deputy minister if the government intends to adopt the model of social housing, utilizing both state-owned properties and properties of “unknown owner” from the Land Registry.
He also asked if the government has planned specific actions to combat homelessness (within) the Recovery Fund, and if the National Poverty Plan provides for such actions.
