Bakoyannis: No neighborhood of Athens will be plunged into darkness – Wise use of energy

by

The mayor of Athens pledged that no neighborhood of Athens will be plunged into darkness. He emphasized, however, that “when an entire country is being tested, we also have to set a good example” announcing a reasonable use of energy, without unnecessary waste.

The discussion of the proposal to reduce the municipal fees for residences and for commercial premises of retail trade and service provision by the factions “Open City”, “Athens is you”, “Mutiny” and “Anti-capitalist overthrow” was a point of friction between the leadership of the municipality of Athens and the opposition, at yesterday’s municipal council meeting. The same is true of the debate on the energy costs of the municipality of Athens and the policies to deal with it, in relation to the government’s announcements about saving energy in the State.

On the part of “Open City”, its head, Nasos Iliopoulos, argued that for housing, retail trade, as well as the provision of services, the municipal authority should undertake to support households and businesses.

The mayor of Athens, Costas Bakoyannis, said that today, according to specific figures, there is a big discrepancy between wishes and reality and that in the coming difficult winter, the will of the municipal authority is “to keep the city standing and functioning”. He emphasized, however, that he will come back to this specific issue, in the context of the budget discussion.

Referring to the issue of energy costs of the municipality of Athens and energy saving, Nasos Iliopoulos spoke of “punitive measures by the government”, which blackmails the local government to justify its failure, as he said. According to Mr. Iliopoulos, the local government should receive a large amount from the Recovery Fund.
