Fishing in Gyaro was universally prohibited

by

It is recalled that the marine area within a radius of three nautical miles around Gyaro has been declared protected since 2019, while at the same time a systematic study of marine biodiversity is being carried out within the framework of the European “Life” program.

An extension to the environmental protection status of Gyaros until July 2024 and a blanket ban on fishing in the protected zones was announced by the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, Giorgos Amyras.

As Mr. Amyras stated after the signing of the relevant ministerial decision, “the model of the Gyaros marine area proves that the protection regime is bearing fruit. The increase in marine biodiversity in the area is encouraging. We are giving a new extension to the protection regime and universally ban fishing in Gyaros, after recording intense fishing activities in the area. For every species of biodiversity we protect, for every ecosystem we heal, we achieve a major victory against the climate crisis.”

It is recalled that the marine area within a radius of three nautical miles around Gyaro has been declared protected since 2019, while at the same time a systematic study of marine biodiversity is being carried out within the framework of the European “Life” program.

The program is spearheaded by the environmental organization WWF, which, with the help of the Coast Guard, has recorded a 55% reduction in illegal recreational fishing and an 85% reduction in commercial fishing over the past five years.

From 2018 to 2021, 83 species of fish were recorded compared to 61 in neighboring areas, while 24 of the 36 species were larger, according to the study by the Hellenic Center for Marine Research (ELKETHE).

Until May of this year, a fishing license was required from the Port Authority of Syros, while in the last quarter there was no prohibition and overfishing phenomena were observed.

According to a relevant announcement by the Ministry of the Interior, with the aim of protecting marine biodiversity, the Ministry of Environment and Energy is proceeding with the universal ban on fishing, while awaiting the scientific data from ELKETHE and WWF on the state of the fish fauna during the last quarter.

The “Life” program continues as normal, while the Special Environmental Study is being completed, so that the issuance of a Presidential Decree for the protection of Gyaros and the marine area can proceed.
