HumanRights360 for Evros: The belief that the refugees were on Greek soil is wrong

by

The founder of HumanRights360, Epaminondas Farmakis, states in his post that his organization does not wish to provoke a border issue between Greece and Turkey

Statement on recent events in Evro and the case of the 38 refugees who were found on an island on Turkish soil, as victims of Turkey’s exploitation of them, was posted on the website of the HumanRights360 organization by the founder of Epaminondas Farmakis.

Mr. Farmakis clarifies that his organization does not wish to provoke a border issue between Greece and Turkey and that due to the morphology of the terrain in the area, he formed the mistaken belief that the refugees were on Greek soil. In this way, the landscape is also clarified before the European Court of Human Rights, which had issued temporary measures based on this incorrect information.

Regarding the case of journalist Giorgos Christidis, who managed to enter Evros Prison as an interpreter for the organization, Mr. Farmakis states that it was the sole initiative of the journalist and without the knowledge of the organization’s administration. He even adds that Mr. Christidis has never been a partner of the organization and this was inaccurately stated in the transmission document of his entry request.

The entire statement of Mr. Farmakis is as follows:

“Our organization has been operating since 2017 as an urban non-profit company with the aim of defending human rights, raising society’s awareness of human rights and values, strengthening, supporting, but also promoting the inclusion in the economic and social life of individuals or social groups population belonging to vulnerable groups.

In this context and for the implementation of programs of this object, it receives funding from national and international bodies, cooperates with international and state bodies as well as local self-government bodies (Hellenic Police, FRONTEX, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Ombudsman), and complies fully with the current legislative and regulatory framework, but also the rules of ethics and moral and good behavior, always maintaining a balanced relationship of trust, respect and cooperation with the State and civil society.

Our organization does not wish, under any circumstances, to create a border issue between Greece and Turkey, nor does it question the borders between the two countries. Its purpose and concern is exclusively the protection of human life and dignity, always within the framework of national and international law, as well as statutory procedures.

In relation to the “38 of Evros” case, we note the following:

  • From the public information available to us and taking into account that the area presents a particularly complex territorial regime as, depending on the flow of the river, sections of land emerge from time to time along it, we formed the erroneous belief that the above were on Greek soil.
  • The entry of a journalist into the KyT of Evros Prison was made on his sole initiative without prior knowledge, information or involvement of the administration of our organization. After all, the above has never been an employee or partner of our organization, as was inaccurately stated in the transmission document of his entry request.

We remain at the disposal of the competent authorities to provide any additional clarification.”
