The authorities in Thessaloniki made one arrest and four arrests after last night’s serious incidents around the AUTH and in the center of the city.
It all started after tension that was noted for an unknown reason inside the AUTH between police forces and members of the wider anti-authoritarian scene when a concert by Thanasis Papakonstantinou was in progress.
The concert was interrupted while police forces used chemicals and stun grenades.
The incidents spread to the city center
Egnatia Street, at the height of the Universities and up to Aristotelous Street, turned into a battlefield, immediately after the gathering of a large number of people in Kamara and after the incidents earlier in AUTH.
The scene was reminiscent of “war”, with groups of protesters constantly throwing objects such as stones and Molotov cocktails at the police forces, with the latter responding by using chemicals, flash grenades, but also throwing water from the “Aianda”.
The extensive incidents broke out near the Universities and extended up to Aristotelous Street, Egnatia Street.
The streets turned into … rings, with barricades, fires in trash cans, “rain” of chemicals and Molotov cocktails on both sides, making the atmosphere suffocating.
The bulk of the protesters were pushed towards Egnatia Street, at the height of Aristotelous, with “Aiantas” constantly throwing water to disperse the crowd.
However, when the police were pushed back, new stones, sticks and other objects were “thrown”. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or damage to civilians, protesters or police officers.
The complaints of the people who participated earlier in the concert of T. Papakonstantinou were intense. Several people complained to the Police forces about the unnecessary use of chemicals in a place where there were also ordinary people with children.
After 2 in the morning, Egnatia Street was reopened to traffic.
The two arrested for the incidents that took place at noon on Friday (16/9) at AUTH between students and forces of the Hellenic Socialist Party, during a protest against the university police, are expected to be brought before the public prosecutor today, as well as the one arrested of the serious incidents that occurred late last night around the AUTH but also in the city center. According to the case file, they are charged with the act of disturbing the peace.
