The total transit time by metro, with the delivery of the project, from the port to the airport is estimated at just 55 minutes.
The delivery of the metro to Piraeus is now a matter of days. Work on the three new metro stations in Piraeus is expected to be completed by September. It’s about them “Maniatika”, “Piraeus” and “Municipal Theater” stations, which, according to the forecasts of those in charge, will increase the total passenger traffic on the metro network to 132,000 citizens daily.
The total transit time by metro, with the delivery of the project, from the port to the airport is estimated at just 55 minutes. Car traffic is expected to decrease by 23,000 per day, as well as a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 120 tons per day.
Piraeus will be upgraded in terms of transportation, since only at the “Piraeus” station it is planned to create a particularly important transportation center, functionally combining two metro lines (Lines 1 and 3), the port, the suburban railway and the extension of the tram to Piraeus (5, 4 km of single line and 12 stations), thus facilitating transfers between all means of transport. In addition, the connection that will arise between the port of Piraeus and the airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” through Line 3 of the metro, will provide special development benefits both to the wider area of Athens and Piraeus, as well as to the national economy in general.
Severe traffic problems in Agia Varvara, Korydallos, Nikaia, Maniatika and Piraeus are expected to decrease significantly with the extension of Line 3 of the “Agia Marina-Piraeus” metro, which in its entirety includes a 7.6 km long tunnel and 6 new modern stations.
In fact, the first traffic results are satisfactory, since July 6, 2020, when the first 3 stations of Agia Varvara, Korydallos and Nikaia were handed over to the passenger public.
As for the three stations, “Maniatika”, “Piraeus” and “Municipal Theatre”, they are expected to breathe new life into the city of Piraeus. As soon as they are put into use, according to the planning, it is expected that several bus lines connecting with the Municipalities of Nikaia and Korydallos will be cut, which, as was done in other extensions, will be converted into inter-municipal and feeder lines to the metro stations.
