AUTH research: 60% probability of 6 Richter in Florina in the coming years

by

Immediately after the January 9, 2022 earthquake of magnitude 5.4, the Florina region entered the… microscope of scientists.

The possibility to give its area Florina earthquake of magnitude 6.0, 6.5 or 6.6 R in the next 100 years are 69%, 30% and 25%, respectively” said the Professor of Seismology of AUTH Theodoros Tsapanos during the presentation to the municipal council of Florina, of the results of the research program “analysis and recording of the local seismic risk in the area of the Municipality of Florina”.

Right after him earthquake of January 9, 2022 magnitude M=5.4, the area of Florina came under the microscope of scientists with the Department of Geophysics and Geology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki under Theodoros Tsapanos, to undertake the monitoring of the phenomenon on behalf of the Municipality of Florina.

The earthquake and the hundreds of microearthquakes that were recorded had a small focal depth, from 6 km to a maximum of 20 km, while the depth from which the main earthquake originated was at 8 km.

According to the study “the January 9, 2022 earthquake occurred on an 8.5 km fault. It was superficial as were its aftershocks. The earthquake occurred in a part of a piece of tectonic structure that “broke” and whose continuity reaches to Bitola”, which, however, as the scientists point out, “remained inactive throughout the study”.

To the question why the earthquakes and the hundreds of aftershocks that followed are strongly felt by the citizens, Mr. Tsapanos explained that it is due to the fact that “the epicenter of all of them was very close to the city, it was at a small focal depth and their directionality was towards the city ».

He mentioned that there is a 59.58% chance of a magnitude 6.0 earthquake by 2030 and that the probability of the region producing a magnitude 6.0, 6.5 or 6.6 R earthquake in the next 100 years is 69%, 30% and 25%, respectively.

The mayor of Florina, Vassilis Giannakis, noted that the data collected from the network of digital seismographs that were deployed throughout the municipality, contributed decisively to the decision of the political leadership of the Ministry of Education to over-admit students to higher education.
