After years, the cameras on bus lanes of Thessalonikiwith the aim of the smooth movement of buses, increasing their speed and, therefore, the reliable execution of routes.

The reopening of the cameras is carried out by the OASTH, in consultation and cooperation with the Thessaloniki Traffic Authority, as the two bodies are working together to improve traffic conditions.

All bus lanes in Thessaloniki have cameras (Monastiriou – Egnatia axis, National Antistaseos axis – Vasilissis Olgas – Vasileos Georgiou, Angelaki, Tsimiski, Alexandrou Papanastasiou axis – Stratou, Mitropoleos, Georgiou Papandreou axis). The cameras on Egnatia Street remain inactive, where construction work on the subway is being carried out.

The cameras will now record violations digitally, through a radar system, which will detect vehicles entering the bus lanes illegally.

As part of the cooperation between the two agencies, with funding from the OASTH, the maintenance of the system (cameras, webs, etc.) was completed, software was installed on a computer of the Thessaloniki Traffic Sub-Directorate and staff were trained in the operation of the call processing program at the Traffic offices .

Cooperation

“We financed the re-operation of the cameras, we work harmoniously with the Thessaloniki Traffic Authority, in order to ensure “clean” and functional bus lanes. I am asking the citizens, the drivers, not to enter, much more not to park in the bus lanes, to ensure fast and safe movement of passengers to their destinations”, emphasizes the President and CEO of OASTH Costas Tangiris.

“Every collaboration, when done in good faith and with the right people who have common visions, pays off. From the first days I took over the Traffic Directorate, it was one of my priorities to restore the cameras that policed the traffic on the bus. I felt bad to see unconscious drivers moving in the bus, without considering the others, with arrogance and ego, as if the others who go about their business normally are stupid and they are smart. The time has come to punish these people, when in a short period of time the notifications will come to them to receive their calls”, underlines the Director of Traffic of Thessaloniki, Brigadier General Thomas Germanos.

The fine

The fine for entering a bus lane is 100 euros. In case of parking inside a bus lane, in addition to the fine, the plates are removed and the vehicle is removed from the Traffic Police.

Entrance

In the bus lanes of Thessaloniki, in addition to buses, the traffic of tourist and school buses, two-wheelers, emergency vehicles (ambulances, fire engines, police cars) is allowed.

In addition, until December 31 of this year, taxis are also allowed to operate in the bus lanes, daily and 24 hours a day, as long as they carry a passenger and the stop for boarding or alighting is made in the special recesses.

If the taxi is not carrying a passenger, it is not allowed to enter the bus lanes from 6.30 am to 9.30 am and from 2 pm to 5 pm.

The bus lanes operate from Monday to Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., with the exception of the bus lane on G. Papandreou, which operates from 12 noon to 9 p.m.
