by

Thousands of runners, cyclists and sailors will carry the baton on a unique 7,767 km route to the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP27.

THE running out of time, the “largest relay ever attempted”, from Glasgow, Scotland to Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, starts on Friday 30 September.

An iconic baton will cross 18 countries hand in hand and carry the environmental message from the new generation to world leaders at the United Nations Climate Change Summit, COP27.

As stated in an announcement by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, which coordinates the Greek section of the relay “thousands of runners, cyclists and sailors will carry the baton on a unique route of 7,767 km that will cross 18 countries».

The baton consists of 18 parts, one for each country on the route. According to the announcement, the baton’s spiral shape represents the four basic levels of climate action we can have an effect on, international, national, local and individual.

The environmental message to leaders at COP27 was produced by the international Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) in collaboration with Sunnyside Primary School, Glasgow. Written in English and Arabic, it will be sealed on the baton at the opening ceremony in Glasgow on 30 September.

“Quality education for climate it is vital if we are to equip citizens of all ages with the necessary knowledge and skills to build a future in which all can prosper,” he notes, among others.

The president of the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, and vice-president of FEE, Nikos Petrou, emphasizes: “This relay race is a unique opportunity to mobilize. Join hundreds of thousands of citizens around the world in demanding quality climate change education, which will give all of us the knowledge and skills that will allow us to face the environmental crisis and fight for a sustainable Earth. Sign up to run in one of the sections of the Greek route”.
