Von der Leyen: EU to contribute € 1 billion to end deforestation |

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced at the COP26 Climate Summit in Glasgow that the EU would contribute € 1 billion to the Global Forest Pledge.

According to the Commission communication, the support package for forests is a five-year and comes from the EU budget. It is intended to support third countries in the effort to protect, restore and sustainable forest management.

“Forests are the green lungs of the earth. We must protect them and restore them. I am pleased to announce the EU ‘s commitment to provide € 1 billion for the protection of global forests. “This demonstrates the EU’s commitment to leading global change to protect our planet, in line with the EU Green Pact.”

EU Partnership Commissioner Utah Urpilainen said the EU contribution “will support sustainable growth and jobs, reducing and adapting to climate change and maintaining biodiversity in our partner countries”.

“Focusing on the Congo basin is a message that comes at the right time and concerns the importance of this unique region and its ecosystem,” he said.
