The total number of regions participating in the mission now stands at 215, which come from 24 Member States

On Thursday 29 September 2022, the Commission announced that 100 additional regions and local authorities are joining the EU’s Mission Charter for climate change adaptation, following the announcement of the first parties in April. The total number of regions participating in the mission now stands at 215, coming from 24 Member States, while 13 signatories are from countries linked or potentially linked to the EU’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme.

From Greece initially (in April 2022) 6 cities were selected:

· Athena,

· Ioannina,

· Riding,

· Kozani,

· Thessaloniki and

· Trikala.

Today, 12 more regions are added. More specifically:

· Ampelokipoi-Menemeni,

· Copper,

· Peninsula,

· Ilion,

· Larisa,

· Nisyros,

· Skopelos,

· Thermaikos,

· Heat,

· Thessaly,

· Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni and

· Bulb.

All regions and local authorities have expressed their willingness to cooperate, mobilize resources and develop activities to achieve climate change adaptation goals. They will have the opportunity to better understand the risks of climate change, prepare for and manage them, and develop innovative solutions to build resilience.

Citizens will be at the center of this mission and are expected to play a key role in the transition to climate neutrality, through new platforms for participation and climate action.

The Climate Change Adaptation Mission, which seeks to implement the objectives of the European Green Deal and the EU’s climate change adaptation strategy, will receive €370 million in funding from the Horizon Europe program for the period 2021-2023.

Mr Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President responsible for the European Green Deal said: “All towns, cities and regions in Europe are affected by the climate crisis. And all of them are implementing solutions or looking for new ideas. We want to bring these communities together so they can test and implement the best possible solutions to become more resilient to climate change. Signatories joining today will be able to benefit from the Mission’s practices and support each other, thus boosting local adaptation efforts.”
