Archimandrite Nikiforos Efstathiou, new Metropolitan of Gortynos and Megalopolis

The ordination of the new metropolitan will take place in the Athens Cathedral next Saturday, October 8.

The current general hierarchal commissioner of the Diocese of Halkidos, Archimandrite Nikiforos Efstathiou, was elected by the Holy Synod of the Hierarchy of the Church of Greece as the new Metropolitan of Gortynos and Megalopolis.

The ordination of the new metropolitan will take place in the Athens Cathedral next Saturday, October 8.

Athanasios Efstathiou was born in Rovies, Evia, on March 20, 1967. In 1985, he was admitted to the Theological School of EKPA, receiving his degree with a “very good” grade.

He holds a master’s degree from the Istituto di Teologia Ecumenico-Patristica “San Nicola” of Bari of the Pugliese School of Theology (Facoltà Teologica Pugliese).

In November 1995, he became a monk at the Holy Monastery of Agios Georgios ARMA of Lavon, taking the name Nikiforos. In the same month he was ordained a deacon and the next an elder.

During the years 1996-1997 he served as preacher and high priest commissioner of Messapia.

In 1998 he was appointed head of the Holy Church of Agia Paraskevi, the patron saint of Halkidos.

During the years 2003-2005 he was the director of the Ecclesiastical Boarding School for Boys “Agia Paraskevi”.

In 2006 he was appointed abbot of the Holy Monastery of Agios Georgios ARMA, succeeding Archimandrite Pavlos Ioannou after his election as Metropolitan of Sisani and Siatistis.

He speaks Italian, while he is also conversant in English.
