Seven out of 10 motorists estimate that using a car requires financial sacrifices
It costs more and more to use a car but many drivers don’t see how to get by without it, according to the Observatory’s annual barometer Cetelem published today.
According to this research conducted in 18 countries, 7 out of 10 motorists consider that using a car requires financial sacrifices, but 72% (75% in France) say they cannot do without it.
Almost two-thirds of respondents fear that they will not be able to own a vehicle in the future, especially in Turkey, Mexico, Portugal or Brazil. This also applies to 59% of French people.
Motorists initially view this loss negatively, fearing that they will no longer be able to move as they would like. Conversely, only 20% see it as a positive move for the environment.
Almost 6 out of 10 respondents state that they have already stopped commuting due to cost, mainly in countries with very fragile economies, such as Turkey and South Africa.
The French are reducing travel
In an effort to save money, the majority of French people say they have cut back on commuting, 46% compare prices to buy the cheapest petrol possible and 44% try to optimize their driving to use less fuel.
A third of drivers also state that he travels more often by foot, bicycle or electric scooter.
From Germany to Brazil, more than one in two respondents have parted with one of their household cars or have decided to do so in the near future.
Drivers estimate their annual car budget (fuel, insurance, maintenance) at €2,753 (€2,870 in France), with petrol being by far the biggest burden.
At the same time, insurance and maintenance costs are considered reasonable by the majority of households, even though they are increasing a lot.
Accordingly, the car purchase price is considered reasonable by many drivers, especially for the large majority who turn to the used market.
The survey was conducted online from June 23 to July 8 by Harris Interactive, with a sample of 16,600 people aged 18 to 65. Of the total participants, 3,000 respondents were from France and 800 from each of the other countries.
