Council of Ministers: The reinstatement of Latin in university entrance exams is legal

by

According to the rationale, the reinstatement “is justified by the legislator’s assessment of the contribution of the Latin course to the cultivation of humanistic studies, deduced from the relevant provision”

The Council of State deemed illegal the reduction and abolition of the teaching of the general education courses “Political Education” in the 1st Lyceum and “Modern World: Citizen and Democracy” in the 2nd Lyceum and deemed legal the reinstatement of the Latin course in the introductory university exams.

In particular, the 3rd Department of the Supreme Court with reference no. 1972/2022 decision ruled that the timetables, with regard to the two courses in question, were issued “illegally, without documentation regarding the observance of pedagogical and scientific criteria, ignoring the criteria for exercising the regulatory authority of the administration”.

At the same time, with its same decision, the Council of State ruled that the regulations of Law 4692/2020 are legal, with which the Sociology course was replaced by the Latin course as a pan-Hellenic subject for admission to higher education.

And this, because according to the State advisors, the reinstatement of the teaching of the Latin course at the Lyceum “is justified by the legislator’s assessment of the contribution of the Latin course to the cultivation of humanitarian studies, deduced from the relevant provision”.
