The Mixed Jury Court of Thessaloniki imposed a 12-year prison sentence on a 49-year-old man for rape, unlawful retention and breach of personal data of a woman – mother of a minor child – whom they met through Facebook. He was unanimously found guilty and no mitigating circumstances were found. The court decided that his appeal would not have a suspensive effect on the execution of the sentence and so he was sent to prison.

The incident took place in March 2017, in an apartment building in Sykies, Thessaloniki.

The sufferer described the nightmare she experienced frame by frame. She stated that she met the defendant online and that they had been chatting for 1.5 years using a social media application. The 45-year-old testified that she made the decision to travel from Athens to Thessaloniki and visit the defendant’s house. “He promised things but what I saw had nothing to do with reality. It was not a matter of appearance but of manner.

He locked me in the basement to do what he did. I was very scared. I felt shame, impoverishment, humiliation. He was hitting me and pulling my hair. She had me immobilized for a while” said the victim and described her rape while pointing out that a dog remained outside the door of the apartment-of the defendant’s pit bull breed. “He took all the photos from my mobile phone to prove that everything was consensual and that we are a couple. She also called her ex-husband,” said the 45-year-old sufferer.

During his apology, the 49-year-old, among other things, claimed the following: “She went up to Thessaloniki and came to host her. He said to me “how is your house like this?” What mobile phone do you have? What are these; I was waiting but”. I had feelings for her at first. Then I realized… He took off the condoms. We went to the room and started normally. Everything that happened in the house was done by her will. I didn’t touch her, I didn’t even scratch her. I took the dog out.”

The defendant’s guilt was suggested by the district attorney. “A friendly, trusting relationship developed after 1.5 years of Facebook conversations. The sufferer decided to meet him but was shocked by the image of the accused and his house – he was living in a filthy condition. He had the dog tied to the door. It does not mean that he gave any consent. He was in a state of fear and panic. Live a thriller. She felt guilty for going to meet him. He had never consented to being rushed. With the use of physical violence, he kept her at home from 7 in the morning until 10 the next day,” said the prosecutor’s office, among other things.
