Full Glass: Avós beer goes around the world in 8 special labels

by

The unsuspecting can imagine that the new series Avós do Mundo, by Cerveja Avós, alludes to the Qatar World Cup, in the wake of the sticker album or fast-food snacks. However, brewer Junior Bottura himself admits that it was just a happy coincidence – after all, even Italy won a label, but didn’t win a place in the Worlds.

After the Avós line in Brazil, the brewery specializing in lagers (low-fermented beers, unlike ales) decided to win this big world with labels that make reference to different countries. Altogether there are eight suggestions, with seasonal releases: Uruguay, England, Italy and Spain are now available. Until the end of November, France (10/28), Argentina (11/3), Germany (11/11) and Brazil (11/16) still arrive — well, only Italy didn’t make it to the World Cup.

In beautiful cans with the respective flags, the beers were baptized with the affectionate name that each grandmother receives in different nations, in addition to including ingredients that remind the countries.

“The essence of Avós is to produce creative and easy-to-drink Lagers. Our brewer and technician in charge Raul Rosa was the one who encouraged us to bet on this line and combine ingredients that refer to different countries to well-executed recipes”, says Bottura.

So we have the Uruguayan Abuela, an Indian pale lager that includes yerba mate; the English Nana is a traditional ESB lager, typically British style, and includes black tea (“of course”). The Italian Nonna is a pilsen with grape-italy, and the interesting Spanish Yaya is a bock, with sherry.

This blogger is curious to see the result of French Mamie, a brut IPA, with French hops. The line also brings the Argentine Abu (red IPL with Argentine hops); the German Omi, a gose lager; and, to top it off, the Brazilian Vó, a Baltic Porter (house specialty) with manioc, açaí and cupuaçu.

The beers can be found on the brewery’s e-commerce (cervejaavos.com/loja/home/) or at Casa Avós itself (r. Croata, 703, Lapa, west region).
