Spyros Haggabimana: As a refugee, the deputy commander of Reception and Identification denounces Turkey’s hybrid war

by

Having been a refugee himself, Spyros Hagkabimana has a staff position in the refugee reception and identification service at the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum. And he can understand these people’s need for freedom.

He is from Burundi, Africa, he studied at the Naval Cadet School and the Law School, and the Greek state entrusted him with the position of Deputy Commander of Reception and Identification at the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum. THE Spyros Haggabimana spoke to SKAI for Turkey’s hybrid war with the instrumentalization of the immigrant, but also for the human moments he experiences when he meets the unfortunate refugees, looking back on his own adventure that brought him to Greece a few years ago.

”It is a hybrid war that we are experiencing from Turkey. In Evros in the previous days we saw people naked and beaten by Turkey it was the top of the mountain. every now and then they let smugglers run wild and put people on boats. Their goal is to make Greece appear as the country that does not respect human rights” says the Deputy Commander of the Reception and Identification Service.

Spyros Hagkabimana, a young man from Burundi, Central Africa, since 2020 has been fighting against the immigration crisis triggered by Erdogan, challenging our country, but also blackmailing Europe.

”Every day Turkey sends people. It is a constant practice of pressure. Not a day goes by that he doesn’t try to smuggle immigrants through. They are arrested from the streets of Turkey. They are arrested from their homes. And they force them to go to the border with Greece. We cannot succumb to such practices,” he emphasizes to SKAI.

Having been a refugee himself, Spyros Hagkabimana has a staff position in the refugee reception and identification service at the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum. And he can understand these people’s need for freedom.

”They imprisoned me in my country, I was tortured horribly… They wanted to kill me because I did not submit to the dictatorial regime that had been created. I fought to come to Greece and make it my homeland today” points out.

But the message to Turkey must be clear…

Turkey should control its borders. Things can’t be out of control. People in Evros are worried, they are threatened and they see the smugglers doing whatever they want.”
