2022 marks post-pandemic landmark year as numbers approach 2019 records

London, Thanasis Gavos

With 80 co-exhibitors, Greece is participating this year in global tourism exhibition World Travel Market in London, at the end of a year described as a “landmark” for the future.

The renovated EOT stand at the Excel exhibition center in the east of the British capital brings together distinct and special elements of the municipalities, regions and tourist businesses that make up the Greek mission, like a miniature of Greece.

Special emphasis is placed this year on the use of audio-visual media, which promote the new initiatives and proposals of the Greek tourist product (winter tourism, Greekend, sustainability of destinations, etc.), in the context of the effort to further increase the country’s recognition (brand awareness) and to meet even more personalized and themed industry and visitor requirements.

On Monday afternoon, the Minister of Tourism, Vassilis Kikilias, will hold a press conference, during which it is expected, among other things, to mention the number of visitors for 2022 and certainly the goals for the following year.

2022 is being marked as a post-pandemic landmark year as numbers have approached 2019’s record high of 34m visitors. Greece’s performance in relation to its main competitors is considered completely satisfactory. The strategic plan for 2023, however, is to clearly surpass the impressive numbers of ’19.

Particular emphasis is expected to be placed on two individual tourist offers: the sustainability of the product, with initiatives such as eco islands, the use of electric bicycles, collaborations with giants of the tourism industry on islands such as Rhodes, but also the promotion of Greek gastronomy, with the aim to establish Greece on the world map of haute cuisine. In this context, the famous Michelin guide will issue a map for Athens.

Mr. Kikilias will have meetings with tour operators, airlines and other players of the global tourism market. It is noted that by 2022 the United Kingdom emerged as the main country of origin for tourists, competing with Germany.

Also in London are the Secretary General of the Ministry of Tourism Olympia Anastasopoulou and the Secretary General of the EOT Dimitris Fragakis
