Stelios Petsas, Deputy Minister of the Interior, in charge of Local Self-Government issues, approved funding of 130,000 euros for the purpose of preventing and dealing with damages and disasters caused by natural disasters.
This is emergency funding for the Municipality of Agios Vassiliou, which was carried out in the context of the act of granting Local Self-Government Organizations by the Ministry of the Interior with OPS code 5168277 and is part of the “Ministry of the Interior’s 2021-2025 TPA”.

The total rehabilitation interventions in this municipality already exceed 730,000 euros. (200,000 euros from the Ministry of Shipping “Reconstruction of the infrastructure networks in the fire-affected areas” and funding from the Ministry of the Interior for the restoration of damages at the level of rural roads with the amount of 400,000).
With the signing of the decision, the mayor of Agios Vasilios, Yiannis Tatarakis, stated that: “The holistic response to natural disasters and the recurrence of crises with huge environmental impacts, such as the recent fires in the Municipality of Agios Vasilios, are challenges of key importance for which we have developed an integrated plan . Not only for the management of the aforementioned risks but also for the restoration of critical infrastructure for our Municipality. In this direction, the funding of 130,000 euros from the Ministry of the Interior will make a decisive contribution to addressing the problems.”
Besides, the mayor of Agios Vassiliou met with the Minister of Labour, Kostis Hatzidakis, to whom he presented the problems and needs of the Municipality regarding the issues of employment, welfare and social solidarity.
He also presented him with the enormous social, environmental and economic consequences of the devastating fires of last July, as well as the proposals and actions of the Municipality regarding both the restoration of infrastructure and the relief of those affected.
The minister, who was aware of the major problems caused by the fire, expressed his support for the Municipality of Agios Vassiliou and also his support for the demands of the local community.
Mr. Tatarakis also met with the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Sofia Zaharakis. The object of the meeting was the presentation of the Municipality’s sustainable development program, where the tourism sector is a key pillar of strengthening the local economy.
Measures and actions were discussed to strengthen the tourism product of the Municipality, its quality upgrade and overall the promotion of the region with the unique, as the mayor described it, natural beauty, the large coastal front, the rare hinterland, the quality local products and the rich cultural heritage.
