Ending headlines for high-profile case – Fake doctor convicted of seven cancer patients’ deaths
The Joint Jury found 50-year-old Nikos Kontostathis unanimously guilty of seven murders and six attempted murders of seriously ill patients.
After a year of process, the judges announced their verdict in a room full of “Dr. Kontos” victims for the years-long activity of the man who, pretending to be a distinguished oncologist, promised cures to seriously ill patients.
In their decision, the judges acquitted Dr Kontos of the remaining five murders and the remaining eight attempted murders charged against him.
The judges, except for the murders, including those of two minor children, and the attempted murders, unanimously found the 50-year-old accused guilty of the charges of felony-degree fraud in a continuous and serial manner against 28 patients and their relatives and patients.
Kontostathis was also found guilty of contravening an authority relating to the period 1.5.2020 to 16.6.2020, as well as for a series of other offences, including felonies, such as continuous forgery and continuous drug trafficking, as well as illegal possession of weapons and monument possession.
The judges unanimously acquitted Kontostathis’ 16 co-accused, including a doctor and former minister.
The District Attorney requested in his proposal that the defendant be sentenced to life in prison for each case of homicide for which he was found guilty and an additional 12 years for each attempted homicide as well as life for the distinguished drug trafficking by profession to minors.
“What shocked the prosecutor’s office was that his actions were against vulnerable people, people who were suffering,” said the prosecutor’s official.
The process continues, so that the judges will later decide on the mitigating factors and the penalties to impose on the supposedly distinguished scientist.
