From the beneficiaries of the Center for the Treatment of Dependent Persons – “Ariadni”, the harvesting of the olive fruit from the olive trees of the Municipality of Heraklion continues.

This pioneering social action is part of the Municipality’s cooperation with KETHEA – “Ariadni”, for the utilization of municipal property for the benefit of socially sensitive groups.

Specifically, in December 2021, the Municipality of Heraklion signed a contract with KETHEA which provides for:

– The free concession to KETHEA for three years of the right to cultivate the olive trees located on properties owned by the Municipality of Heraklion, specifically in Metochi Gryllionakis in Karteros (approximately 1,300 trees) and in the “Bank” area in Ierapetra (approximately 1,500 trees).

– The employment in the cultivation and harvesting of the olive fruit of KETHEA beneficiaries as well as our socially weak fellow citizens who will be indicated by the Social Services of the Municipality of Heraklion.

– That the olive oil produced will be distributed as follows: after the one-year grace period, during which KETHEA will keep the entire quantity produced, the Center will manage 75% of the product to cover cultivation costs and as contribution to the realization of its goals and will give the Social Grocery of the Municipality of Heraklion 25% of the production of the property in Karteros as well as the Community of Kato Asito 25% of the property in Ierapetra (the property was bequeathed there).

On Thursday morning, the Mayor of Heraklion, Vassilis Lambrinos, visited Metochi Gryllionakis and the olive fruit collection point, accompanied by the Deputy Mayor of Social Policy, Rena Papadakis, and the Deputy Mayor of Municipal Property, Manolis Vassilakis.

The Mayor had the opportunity to talk with the manager of KETHEA – “Ariadni” Michalis Skoulas who informed him that already around 500 people, beneficiaries of the Center throughout Crete, are using the olive oil that has been produced from the exploitation of the Municipality’s olive trees.

At the same time, the Mayor also spoke with the beneficiaries participating in the harvest, who expressed their joy and thanks as this specific process helps a lot in their efforts to reintegrate. As reported since the beginning of this year, 2 tons of excellent quality olive oil have been collected and it is estimated that in total only from Metochi Gryllionakis they will reach 4 tons.

Immediately after, the Mayor stated: “This year we are continuing the initiative that we started in 2020, then in collaboration with DEPANAL and since last year in collaboration with KETHEA, through which we utilize the municipal property in the best possible way, for the benefit of of our socially weaker fellow citizens.

It is extremely important that KETHEA, through this partnership, offers employment to its beneficiaries, which will have multifaceted benefits for them.

And it is really a great satisfaction for us to see the children of KETHEA working with so much fun and joy.

We have said many times that our goal is for no resident of this city to feel alone and helpless. And actions like this constitute an essential social policy in this direction”.
