The reactions of the Hellenic Book Association (ENELVI), the Athens Book Publishers Association (SEKVA) and the Association of Publishers of Scientific Books (SEEBI), as well as the Writers’ Association, were provoked by the move of a group of parents from Evrigou to Chalkida to book which talks about the coronavirus.
In a joint statement, the three publishing houses state:
“It was certain that the intolerance, the distorted perception of reality and the fanaticism of some of our fellow citizens would end in absolute horror: the burning of books.
The dark incident that took place in Chalkida by parents who did not have the coronavirus and the vaccination refers to other times and causes anger, concern and sadness.
The book is an absolute good. One can agree or disagree with its content. He can keep it in his library or eradicate it from it. He has no right to burn it in public and at a public event, not because it was preceded by a similar Nazi act that went down in history as an immunoassay against the human spirit, but because personal education and cultivation forbid anyone from contemplating this act. . Especially when those who handed over the book of Eugenios Trivizas to the fire are parents who, in fact, are role models for their children and shape their character and beliefs.
How are such incidents dealt with – in essence and at their core -? According to Socrates, education, always a prosperous country, always brings goods. Education can be provided by the state and the family: the state’s concern for a high level of education at all levels and the creation of school libraries, combined with the cultivation of a love for books and reading in the child’s natural environment – the family – created by readers, conscious citizens, mature people.
“Then we can hope that discretion, perceptual ability, right reason will prevail over ignorance and misinformation.”
In its announcement, the Writers’ Association notes:
“Books on fire: an image that evokes darkness, sad as well as outrageous, and which the Writers’ Society unequivocally condemns. In a democratic society there is no excuse for such phenomena. The burning of the book of the internationally recognized author of children’s literature and member of our Society Eugenios Trivizas causes disgust. The historical memory awakens and frightens the pedagogical model that the perpetrators project with this act. “Let there be no room for such standards.”
