The Armed Forces are entering the debate on gender-based violence

by

“Men who were exposed to domestic violence as children are three or four times more likely to engage in some form of violence”

With a video posted on its website and social media, the Panhellenic Federation of Military Unions (POMENS) opens the debate on gender-based violence in the Armed Forces as well, and even formulates a series of proposals to deal with the phenomenon.

Showing how violence against women can be expressed in many different forms, such as psychological, verbal, physical violence, POMENS, which has established an equality secretariat as part of its operation, notes that “a tragic culmination of the phenomenon is the endless record of femicides, an average of one per month” in Greece.

In fact, in the relevant video, the equality secretariat of POMENS notes that “men who were exposed to domestic violence as children are three or four times more likely to manifest some form of violence” while it typically states that “of the 41 femicides in the period 01/01 /2018 to 31/03/2020, 4 women were murdered by military or police officers”.

The general secretary of Equality, Katerina Kiourtsidou, told APE-MPE: “At a time when Greece is experiencing a great increase/explosion of gender-based violence, we all have to help fight it. Not only the state has an obligation, but all institutional bodies, as well as us as the POMENS Secretariat for Gender Equality. We are active alongside female and male military personnel with activities to inform and raise awareness among our colleagues. The Armed Forces are an institution that must work hard, alongside the rest of society, to put an end to violence against military personnel and their families.”
