Yiannis Topaloudis states that both for his family and for all families who experienced a similar loss, managing emotions, pain “is a situation of insurmountable difficulty
“Through the pain we experience, which will never go away, no matter how many years pass, whether four as it is the day after tomorrow, or fourteen, until we die, we try as much as we can to give something to this society. To give something to our children, to create a better, safer environment. This is what today’s actions in memory of our Helen mean for us…”. With these phrases, the Yannis Topaloudis, father of Eleni, the 21-year-old student, whose murder in Rhodes four years ago, on November 28, 2018, shocked society, explains what the actions in memory of his daughter, which took place yesterday in Didymoteicho by decision, mean to his family of the municipal authority. A street, a monument bearing the name of Eleni and an informative event on gender violence with the participation of secondary school students, are actions that, according to Mr. Topaloudis, aim to raise awareness in society.
With unparalleled strength of soul, thanking the Municipality of Didymoteicho and especially the mayor Romilos Hatzigiannoglou as well as his predecessor Paraskevas Patsouridis, Mr. Topaloudis clarifies to APE-MPE that this is not a monument of commemoration but of hope for the children. “As a family, we wanted secondary schools in our region to participate, which would receive some information from specialist scientists, from Evros bodies, but also do some experiential activities themselves. These are the hope of the place and I wish this tomorrow’s generation to be something better, to create a safer environment. We are trying to give something to our children and we will be present here like many others from Greek society, as long as the respective rulers are willing to listen and act accordingly”, he says characteristically.
He states that both for his family and for all families who have experienced a similar loss, managing emotions, pain “is a situation insurmountable difficulty. All of us are trying to overcome this insurmountable difficulty, to climb this psychological calvary. Until we die this calvary will never end, nor will we be able to climb to the top and rest. As for what defense mechanisms each person has in order to be able to manage it, I would say that primarily the mother and the father give each other courage and the other children, the victim’s siblings, if there are any, all together try together to face this difficulty. From there on, you try through some such actions that take place to raise the awareness of Greek society and, as I mentioned above, the rulers to do the best for our children, to do and achieve something that, as we said from the first moment, “None” Another Eleni” but let it not only be our wishes. In addition to wishes, we try with our actions to inform and raise awareness as much as we can and we will be here in these ramparts of the social struggle”.
