The battle against cancer is progressing victoriously and doctors now have “new targeted therapies, new surgeries, new technology” in their quiver
“In the next 10 to 15 years, cancer will be a chronic disease with which we will live without it killing us”, estimated the surgical oncologist, director of the 4th Surgical Clinic and Clinical Oncology at the Trans-Balkan Medical Center of the Athens Medical Group, Ioannis Spiliotis, speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the conference on “Surgical Oncology… out of bounds”, which is being held on November 25-26 at the Transbalkanikos Amphitheater.
“The discussions that took place during the conference showed that the battle against cancer is progressing victoriously and we now have in our quiver new targeted treatments, new surgeries, new technology” noted Mr. Spiliotis. At the same time, he explained that the “out of bounds” referred to in the title of the conference means that many times even where it seems that the battle has been lost, a series of studies show that the combination of many specialties can give results.
“The new surgical operations are operations that, thanks to the new technology and the specialization of the training of the surgeons, can go more effectively with greater aggression in cases of patients who have initially been characterized without a therapeutic approach”, pointed out Mr. Spiliotis.
He also noted that the decoding of the human genome gave the opportunity to have new treatments and added: “Every year there are new drugs that improve not only the quality of life but also increase the life expectancy. Interventional radiology, interventional pulmonology, the new technologies that our hospital has, make it possible to solve problems and put more life into the daily lives of patients.”
“The goal of Transbalkanic Medicine is to make a significant contribution to the fight against cancer through smart technologies and enhanced diagnostic and interventional capabilities that will make it possible to deal with every case, no matter how complex it may be,” noted the Group’s executive vice president Athens Medical School Christos Apostolopoulos.
